SD, short for Secure Digital, is a memory card format that contains NAND flash with a tiny microcontroller. The microcontroller implements a FTL (Flash Translation Layer) that takes disk-like block accesses and translates it into meaningful NAND operations, as well as performing wear-leveling and block sparing. It was introduced in 1999 by SanDisk and Toshiba who were looking to improve MMC cards. It has become an industry standard and is widely used in industrial applications today. SLC based SSDs are the most reliable, durable, and fast SSDs.
